Former President Trump is running in 2024. He hopes to avenge his loss from 2020 and move his residence back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He isn’t the only one looking for a chance to be President, Governor Ron DeSantis is someone many hope will throw his hat into the ring. While Trump and DeSantis seem to be GOP front runners, Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, and Mike Pompeo are scoping out the upcoming presidential election.
The party splits between Trump and the Never Trumpers. The Never Trumper crowd, while growing, is a split faction. Some view DeSantis as too similar to Trump and will split the vote between Haley, Pence, and Pompeo. The other crowd sees DeSantis as a reasonable version of Trump. Regardless of who wins the GOP nomination, it will be a long battle to victory. This primary will not be a walk in the park for any candidate.
Trump and DeSantis have the most support and some voters even want Trump to run with DeSantis as the Vice President. These supporters think that if a Trump/DeSantis ticket can win in 2024, DeSantis can win in 2028 and 2032, giving the GOP the White House for 12 years. It will not happen that way. Republicans have lost the popular vote in 7 out of the 8 last presidential elections. As bad as the Biden Administration is for America, it does not mean Biden or another Democrat won’t win in 2024. It will be a fight until the bitter end in 2024. The GOP needs the best candidate on the stage to run against the Democrats.
What happens in 2024, will affect what happens in elections going forward. The GOP needs a strong response in the 2024 election. They need to show the American people things can be different. We can have a secure border, we don’t have to allow drugs to pour through our border, inflation does not have to be permanent, and crime does not have to continue to run rampant through our streets. The GOP needs a contender that can run strong on policy and stay above the fray. Trump had a great run and many want to see him win in 2024, but other voters want a change. Trump met the moment in 2016, but his actions in 2020 were drastically different from the previous years of Trump. The pandemic was not President Trump’s fault, but his leadership pales when compared to Governor DeSantis. DeSantis was not in an election year still he met the moment he was in during 2020, resulting in mass migration to Florida because of his policies.
Whoever wins the nomination will need to be a strong candidate. We need a president that can bring the nation together and put forth effective policy to correct the course of our nation. As much as GOP voters want to dominate the elections and control the legislative agenda, they must realize that every election cycle will be extremely close on a national level. The support must be behind the candidate most likely to win and win re-election. We cannot afford to lose again in 2024.
