Family disputes heat up in Georgia Senate Election
Why Walker was a tough candidate to run to begin with.
Twitter controversy is taking the Georgia Senate race by storm. Republican candidate Herschel Walker’s son, Christian, has posted several tweets repeatedly stating that he is tired of the lies. Christian has come forward with family grievances he feels towards his father for having multiple children and not being around to raise any of them. This breaks right after the story dropped of Herschel wanting his girlfriend to have an abortion while being married to someone else. Herschel recently went on the record coming out against abortion with no exemptions. Christian seemingly decided enough was enough when his father denied the allegations of wanting his girlfriend to have an abortion while married to another woman. The former football star’s candidacy has reeked with controversy since he announced he was running. Some on Twitter have even preemptively blamed Christian for the potential loss of his father’s bid for the Senate.
The real issue is not with Christian in the case of the Senate race. He has no bearing on if his father wins or loses. It does not help the campaign or Republicans in any way but Christian cannot change his father’s previous actions and he can not be to blame that his father was not always around in his life. Christian has posted tweets and Tik Toks in the past begging fathers to be present in their children’s lives. Christian has the right to talk about whatever he wishes to speak about on social media even if that means coming out against his father's behavior.
The real issue comes with the GOP. Trump backed Walker early on and was a loud voice that no doubt helped garner votes for him in the primary. Other members of the GOP have backed Walker which leads to questioning if anyone did a quick google search of Walker’s past before they started endorsing him. The story related to Walker pulling a gun on his wife was easy to find before the race got started. Now that story is broadcasted on ads and social media. The only person to blame for the events of Walker’s past is himself and while it is unfortunate from a political standpoint that Christian is speaking about these issues so close to voting, is it surprising that all of this would come out? Walker should have been vetted before GOP members started to back him. Perhaps they thought that his high-profile football career would help him gain votes but what has become more profile is his affairs and multiple children that he did not help to raise. The GOP would do well to learn from this and properly vet candidates before backing them.
The voters in Georgia need Republican candidates they can count on. They want candidates that will go to Washington and stand up for the voters in Georgia. They will never get those candidates if GOP members continue to back barely viable runners. Republicans need to run candidates that will be able to beat the Democrats based on policy alone. They cannot have dark spots in their past that bring dark clouds over their candidacy. Even in a more red state such as Georgia, the press that Walker has received compared to Warnock has been different even though they have similar stories. Warnock’s ex-wife has accused him of trying to run her over during a heated argument between them. Warnock even faces accusations of covering up child abuse and using campaign funds to pay for child support. Warnock’s terrible past does not get mentioned a fraction of the amount as Walker’s when they are both sitting on horrid accusations.
This race will come down to voter turnout. A close race between candidates that have similar stories but are running on very different platforms. Voters should realize that while both candidate’s pasts are atrocious one candidate is for open borders, abortion regardless of gestation, and is not bothered by inflation. This election is somewhat similar to the 2016 election where many had to pinch their nose and vote strictly for policies and not the candidate’s behind the policies.
This race will be tight and Christian’s recent posts may not affect many voters if it stays on Twitter. Democrats are more likely to be on Twitter versus Republicans but even if Christian’s posts get national attention the truth is, Walker was a difficult candidate to run anyway. He had no inspiring platform to run on and oftentimes it seemed that if he followed Biden’s strategy of hiding during the campaign he might do better in the polls. Georgians cannot continue to be trapped with terrible candidates with no real plan to bring forth change.
The Democrats do not have the solutions as a party that this country needs. Neither Warnock nor Ossoff have presented good ideas to the Senate and their views do not reflect the majority of the views held by Georgians. Georgians need candidates they have something in common with. Republicans should have never lost the Senate races in 2020 and have longed since looked to 2022 as the race that would at least give them at least one seat back. With a race as tight as this one, they still may not win the seat back. In a state like Georgia, the GOP should be ashamed to lose another race, especially after the new voting bill that increased voter confidence in the integrity of the elections. The Republican party has a lot to offer voters, especially with the sharp decline of the state of the nation over the last two years. They cannot allow Georgia to go from being a safe Republican state to a state that leans D.
The GOP owes Georgians a lot more than that. They need to back candidates with stronger platforms and those who won’t give the media more ammunition to come after them. The Democrats are facing an uphill battle this election so it isn’t hard to ask if the Georgia GOP could run candidates that want hard-on-crime policies and policies that will help fight inflation. This race should have been easier for the GOP to win in Georgia but a lack of adequate vetting brought forth a candidate who should have never run to begin with.
